To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed HoPE mechanism, we run extensive simulations on memory traces obtained from multi-threaded benchmarks running on a full-system simulation framework. Unlike previous approaches, the HoPE framework considers the performance balance/tradeoff between the increased effective cache capacity and the decompression penalty. HP and HBI efficiently identify the hot compressed cachelines, while ED selectively decompresses hot cachelines, based on their size information. To this end, we propose a Hot-cacheline Prediction and Early decompression (HoPE) mechanism that consists of three synergistic techniques: Hot-cacheline Prediction (HP), Early Decompression (ED), and Hit-history-based Insertion (HBI). In this article, we aim to minimize the read-hit decompression penalty in compressed Last-Level Caches (LLCs) by speculatively decompressing frequently used cachelines. This overhead becomes more severe if compression is used in the cache. However, data compression techniques incur some cost, such as non-negligible compression and decompression overhead. Suunto D5 shows the ceiling value always from the deepest of these stops.īelow is a typical decompression dive view showing ascent time and the first recommended deepstop at 20.Data compression plays a pivotal role in improving system performance and reducing energy consumption, because it increases the logical effective capacity of a compressed memory system without physically increasing the memory size. If you ignore the alarm and stay above the safe margin for three minutes, Suunto D5 locks the algorithm calculation, and decompression information will not be available anymore on the dive. An audible alarm and a downward pointing red arrow in front of the depth value indicate unsafe decompression. If you go above the safe margin area, the decompression calculation is paused until you go back down below this limit. This is indicated by the ceiling depth value turning yellow with a downward pointing yellow arrow in front of the depth value.

In this safe margin area, decompression calculation still continues, but you are advised to go down below the ceiling depth. So in this example, it is between 17.7 m (58 ft) and 17.1 m (56 ft). If you ascend above the ceiling depth, there is still a safe margin area, equaling to ceiling depth minus 0.6 meters (2 ft).

The downward and upward pointing white arrows indicate that you are within the deco window. When you ascend close to the ceiling depth and enter the deco window area, two arrows appear in front of the depth value. The closer to the ceiling you stay, the more optimal the decompression time is. This is the area where decompression takes place. So the deco window in this example is between 20.7 m (68 ft) and 17.7 m (58 ft).

There is a decompression window (Deco window) that is the distance between the decompression ceiling (Deco ceiling) plus 3.0 m (9.8 ft) and the decompression ceiling. set last stop depth to 3.0 m or 6.0 m (default is 3.0 m).
